Be patient and consistent! It can take several weeks
to housetrain a puppy.
- Confine the puppy to one room or portion of a
room with an easily cleaned floor until he's fully housebroken.
- Consider using a crate when you're away and at
night.
- Feed your pup 3-4 small meals a day, and remove
uneaten food when he's through. This promotes regularity in bathroom
habits and stimulates a good appetite in between meals.
- Take the pup outside to the same spot every few
hours; also, after eating, after sleeping, at the end of play, or when
he circles and sniffs the ground. Until he's five-months-old, he'll
need to relieve himself once at night.
- Praise the puppy when he goes to the bathroom
outdoors, and scold him if you catch him going in the house.
- Never push the pup's nose in his mess or spank
him. Don't reprimand him for going in the house if you don't see it
happen.
- Paper training will teach him to use papers,
not to go outdoors. Papers may be used to keep the floor clean, but
take the pup outside to go as soon and as often as you can.
- Clean up messes thoroughly and neutralize the
scent with commercial products or with vinegar and water, otherwise
the pup will use the same spot again.
